I was working as a freelance directory listings researcher/fact checker with the hyper local news start-up Patch.com at the Aol HQ offices in New York City. My main job duties consisted of fact checking and research, both online and on the phone with local businesses; writing and editing listings for the directory and communicating with local editors and copy editors in the respective towns and communities.
Time Out New York Magazine
I spent the summer of 2009 (June - August) interning with the editorial department at Time Out New York. I worked specificially with the Own This City section, in print and online. I was involved in the daily process for my department, working on deadlines towards weekly publication. I was assigned various duties like,
•Writing blogs for magazine’s online daily feature, "Last Minute Plan." •Covering and writing on feature events for online and print. •Fact checking for print magazine’s features and event listings. •Conducting phone and man-on-the street interviews. •Copy-editing on proofs of magazine content. I really got a hands-on experience and increased knowledge of the magazine and publishing industry at Time Out.
SIRIUS XM Satellite Radio
I spent the summer of 2008 interning with the interactive/online editorial department at the then-SIRIUS Satellite Radio. It was certainly exciting to be interning at such a big company, and even moreso while it was undergoing one of media history's biggest mergers. Despite the 'large corporate environment', my editors were always there to mentor and interact with me on a professional and personal level. It was the best first internship I could ask for. I worked closely with both the editorial and design departments for SIRIUS' website content. Some of my duties included,
•Writing teases and leads for channel pages. •Pitching ideas for various programming web content. •Compiling video and audio inventory lists. •Copy-editing pages on website and weekly music channel e-newsletter. •Photo editing web content with Photoshop.
I left SIRIUS Radio with a new perspective on the ever-changing and growing possibilities of the media industry.
